Ten Cabernet Sauvignon Under $40

Can one find Cabernets under $40? With the continued escalation of the price point where Cabernets hover in the $80-$100 range, the wine becomes out of reach for those just wanting a nice Cab for their weekday dinner. Here is a list of ten Cabernet Sauvignons under $40 that I tasted this year. While they may not have the power of their triple-digit siblings, they are perfect for an everyday meal. Please check out my list and let me know if you agree with me (listed in alphabetical order):

·         Band of Vintners Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2018 I tasted this in January in my daily wine sets. Drinking well and showing lovely black fruits and hints of licorice, packed and soft on the palate. Call your friends and sip it with a sausage and mushroom pizza. (My Rating: 91 Points) Suggested Retail Price: $35

·         Buena Vista Cabernet Sauvignon, North Coast 2020 I have tasted plenty of Buena Vista wines in my career, and I have always liked their price/value ratios. This wine is lovely and endearing with black fruit aromas, a rounded palate, and a soft touch in the finish. Perfect with grilled lamb chops. (My Rating: 89 Points) Suggested Retail Price: $18

·         Charles Krug Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2018 Over the past decade, this well-known winery has made substantial improvements in its wines. My notes across the board have shown that. This wine offers excellent palate richness. Appealing aromas of loganberry and savory spices lead to a slightly elevated palate with sandalwood and dried spices. Pair it with a well-spiced, oven-baked Porchetta. (May Rating: 91 Points) Suggested Retail $39

·         DAOU Discovery Collection Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2021 There are a lot of changes for the good happening in Paso Robles, and DAOU is at the forefront of all of it. This is generous from start to finish. Explosive with loganberries and savory spices; slight elevation on the palate and a lasting finish. Try it with grilled pork kebabs. (My Rating: 90 Points) Suggested Retail: $30

·         Four Vines The Kinker Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2020 Four Vines is one of my favorite Central Coast wineries. This wine is expansive, supple, and long; black fruit, savory spices, licorice, and oak fill the palate. Enjoy it with a grilled, well-marbled ribeye. (My Rating; 89 Points) Suggested Retail: $18

·         J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2020 J. Lohr is an excellent winery producing a wide variety of wines. This wine, one of the winery’s most successful efforts over the years, is delectable as it combines ripe fruit and oak into a cohesive product. Pair it with grilled baby back ribs. (My Rating: 89 Points) Suggested Retail: $17

·         Kathryn Kennedy Winery Small Lot Cabernet, Santa Cruz Mountains 2019 It has been quite a while since I tasted this winery’s wines. I found this one quite delicious; black fruits, earth notes, and chalkiness show up on the palate; smooth finish. It is perfect for friends who are over for a casual cookout. (My Rating: 90 Points) Suggested Retail: $40

·         Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa County 2019 Made by the Michael Mondavi Family, this wine is lively and bright with a nice showing of red currants; enjoy its raciness with oven-baked pork ribs. (My Rating: 90 Points) Suggested Retail: $25

·         One Stone Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2020 On the red fruit and dried leaves side of Cabernet, this wine shows excellent balance and style. Enjoy its friskiness with grilled salmon fillets. (My Rating: 89 Points) Suggested Retail: $18

·         Tenshen Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2017 One my discoveries from 2022, this wine shows black fruits, earth, violets, and oak. The wine’s packed palate pairs it well with a mixed grill. (My Rating: 91 Points) Suggested Retail: $25

·         Vina Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles 2019 I have followed this winery for more than a decade and I have found it consistent as a top producer. This wine is full-bodied and offers an explosion of black fruits and oak. (My Rating: 89 Points) Suggested Retail: $26

One must expand the search in searching for the best Cabernet Sauvignon deals. While I tasted and enjoyed plenty of Napa Valley Cabs this year, I found some of California’s top values from wineries in Paso Robles. If you enjoy Cabs, be open to trying them from places you may never have considered before.
